Three Mumbai Bridges Open: What It Means for Buyers in Sion, Vidyavihar and Goregaon

Mid-Day reported that the Sion rail overbridge, the Vidyavihar flyover and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road connector are set to be inaugurated. Commutes around all three crossings should get easier, but any effect on prices and rents will be gradual and uneven.

What happened?

Mid-Day reported that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to inaugurate three long-delayed bridges on Thursday: the Sion rail overbridge, the Vidyavihar flyover and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) connector. The ceremony is planned for 1 pm at the Vidyavihar site. According to the paper, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar said the work and the checks are complete and the bridges will open to the public soon.

As Mid-Day described it, the Vidyavihar flyover should improve east-west movement within the suburb. The civic body planned it in 2016, and construction began in May 2018. It includes one of the city's longest steel road spans, 98 metres over ten railway lines. The Sion overbridge replaces a structure that was about 110 years old. An IIT audit had flagged its poor condition as early as 2020, after which it was closed and demolished. Reconstruction began in August 2024, and the new bridge links the Eastern Express Highway with the western side of the city.

The GMLR connector, which began construction in 2022, is meant to join Dindoshi Court with Film City and give motorists in the western suburbs another route. Mid-Day described all three as links that should ease congestion, but it did not report any traffic data or opening-day figures.

Which sectors are affected?

  • Sion
  • Vidyavihar
  • Goregaon
  • Dindoshi and Film City belt
  • Eastern Express Highway corridor
  • Goregaon-Mulund Link Road corridor
  • Mumbai suburban road network

Potential impact

Opening a crossing helps most when it removes a real bottleneck. The Sion bridge restores a link that had been shut for years, so nearby residents and businesses may simply get back a route they used to have. That usually supports existing demand more than it creates new demand. The Vidyavihar and GMLR connectors add east-west options. Homes that were awkward to reach from the other side of the railway line or the highways may now look more attractive to commuters.

Price and rent effects are hard to predict from this report alone. Mumbai's city-wide average in our data is about ₹32,000 per sq ft, and any gain near a bridge would be a small part of that figure. It would also depend on the project, the building age and local supply. Mid-Day gave no traffic numbers, and a bridge that opens can still back up if the roads feeding it stay congested. Treat these openings as a modest plus for access, not a guarantee of appreciation.
