Metro Line 5 Gets Its First Rake: What It Means for Buyers and Tenants in Thane-Bhiwandi
Mumbai Live and The Indian Express reported that a borrowed train is now on Metro Line 5 and trials are due soon. A working metro link could improve demand along the Thane-Bhiwandi belt, but commercial service still depends on trials and safety clearance.

Illustrative What happened?
Mumbai Live reported that the first train has reached Metro Line 5, which links Thane and Bhiwandi. The rake was borrowed from Lines 2A and 7 and placed on the corridor during Navratri. MMRDA has finished energising the track and overhead equipment, and station finishing work is still going on.
The Indian Express said trials are expected to start next week and may run for a few months. After that, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety must inspect the line before any passenger service. Both outlets said the borrowed trains are a stopgap until the dedicated rakes ordered for this line arrive next year. Early service is expected to run with a gap of five to six minutes between trains.
According to both reports, the opening is pencilled in for December 2026, with the later part of the 2026-27 financial year as the fallback. The Indian Express listed seven stations, from Kasarvadavali, which connects to Line 4, to Dhamankar Naka. Mumbai Live added that a later extension towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar is targeted for 2030-31.
Which sectors are affected?
- Thane-Bhiwandi corridor
- Bhiwandi warehousing and industrial belt
- Kasarvadavali
- Kalyan and Ulhasnagar (later phase)
- MMR residential rental market
Potential impact
If the line opens on schedule, a ride of roughly 25 minutes in place of the 45 minutes or more now seen at peak hours could make homes along the corridor more attractive to people who work in Bhiwandi's warehouses and units. That could support rental demand first, since workers tend to rent close to a station before they buy. Any price effect is likely to be gradual and uneven, and it cannot be guaranteed.
The present news is about equipment arriving and testing starting, not about passengers travelling. Dates have already been given as a range, and trials, safety checks and the wait for dedicated trains could push things back. The Kalyan and Ulhasnagar extension is a long way off and should not be priced in today.
