Metro 4 First Trainset Unveiled: What It Means for Property Prices in Thane's Ghodbunder Belt
Alstom has built the first of 39 driverless trainsets for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A, a manufacturing step rather than an opening date. Housing along the Wadala–Kasarvadavali corridor gains a firmer timeline signal, but passenger service still depends on several approvals.

Illustrative What happened?
Mumbai Live reported that Alstom unveiled the first driverless Metropolis trainset for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A at its Sri City plant in Andhra Pradesh on October 14. It is the first of 39 trainsets meant for the 32.32-km elevated line linking Wadala in Mumbai with Kasarvadavali in Thane.
According to the report, Alstom built this trainset in 14 months and supplies the fleet to Larsen & Toubro, which holds the systems package awarded by MMRDA. The train is expected to leave the factory by the end of November and reach Mumbai by mid-December, after which it must clear testing and safety certification, including checks involving RDSO and the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety.
Mumbai Live noted that the line will have 30 stations and is designed to carry roughly 25,000 passengers per hour in each direction. The publication stressed that when passengers can actually ride will depend on the rest of the fleet arriving, the trains being matched with track, power and signalling work, and statutory clearances being obtained.
Which sectors are affected?
- Mumbai Metro Line 4 and 4A
- Wadala–Kasarvadavali–Gaimukh corridor

Potential impact
A visible rolling-stock milestone tends to firm up buyer confidence in homes near planned stations, and it could support demand and resale interest in Thane's Ghodbunder belt over time. Mumbai's average price in our data is ₹32,000 per sq ft, and corridor-adjacent micro-markets are likely to be priced with the line's arrival already partly in mind.
The effect is not immediate or guaranteed. One trainset does not make an operating line, and the report itself lists several steps still ahead. Any price gain would likely be gradual and uneven, and buyers should treat the opening date as unconfirmed.
