Kangra Airport Land Acquisition Nears End: What It Means for Property Prices in Kangra
Hindustan Times reports that land acquisition for the Kangra airport expansion is close to done, with most compensation already paid. That moves the project from paperwork toward construction, but the runway is still only a plan.

Illustrative What happened?
Hindustan Times reported, citing officials, that about ₹2,400 crore has reached beneficiaries so far for the Kangra airport expansion in Himachal Pradesh. Awards worth ₹2,580 crore have been announced across 14 revenue villages. The combined bill for acquisition and relief and rehabilitation is currently estimated at around ₹3,200 crore.
According to the paper, about ₹215 crore has been paid under the rehabilitation head and another ₹360 crore is still pending for affected families. The district tourism development officer said possession is being taken and some residents have started pulling down their structures. Land in eight of the 14 villages has been transferred to the tourism department. Officials said no new sowing will be allowed on acquired land, and fencing is due to begin soon.
The report puts the number of affected households at nearly 1,200, and says almost the whole Gaggal township, about 2km from the airport, will have to move. The plan is to stretch the runway from 1,376 metres to 3,010 metres so that aircraft like the Airbus A320 can land. Today only 72-seater planes can use it, with five to six flights a day. For 11 to 17 October the airport logged 60 aircraft movements and 3,550 passengers, down from 64 movements and 4028 passengers in the week before.
Which sectors are affected?
- Kangra airport (Gaggal)
- Kangra valley
- Gaggal township
- 14 affected revenue villages
- Himachal Pradesh tourism and hospitality
Potential impact
Completed acquisition removes one of the biggest causes of delay for airport projects, so the expansion is now more credible than a plan that is still waiting for land. If larger aircraft and more routes follow, demand for hotels, homestays, second homes and plots in the valley could firm up. Any price effect would probably show first in places with easy access to the airport, and it would take time. Nothing in the report gives a construction schedule or an opening date.
There are also reasons for caution. Construction funding, approvals and the airline interest needed to fill larger aircraft are not covered in the report, and weekly traffic actually slipped between the two weeks quoted. The relocation of most of Gaggal township will also reshape the neighbourhood closest to the airport, and displaced families will look for homes and land elsewhere in the valley. That could push up local prices unevenly. Buyers should treat any airport-linked premium as speculative until work visibly starts.
