Illustrative What happened?
OdishaTV reported that the Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda has received a Centre sanction of Rs 2,100 crore under a scheme for upgrading airports. The outlet said flights currently link the town with Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar, and that about 1,000 passengers use the airport each day.
According to the report, the plan covers a longer runway, going from 2,391 metres to 3,600 metres, along with a second terminal, a new administrative complex, a parallel taxi track, extra parking bays and aprons, approach lighting and upgraded navigation systems.
OdishaTV quoted Bargarh MP Pradeep Purohit as saying the state government is acquiring land. The airport sits on 1,027 acres, and a further 226 acres is being taken over. Officials expect passenger numbers to double and more airlines and routes to follow, the report said.
Which sectors are affected?
- Jharsuguda town and its residential market
- Western Odisha trade and industry
- Air connectivity and tourism
- Rental housing near the airport
Potential impact
A larger airport with more routes can make Jharsuguda easier to reach for business travellers, contractors and visiting executives. Over time that may add to demand for rented homes and serviced stays, and could support interest in residential plots and flats. Our data has no tracked project or price series for Jharsuguda, so we cannot say how much any such effect might be.
This is a sanctioned plan, not a finished airport. Land acquisition is still under way, and the report gives no construction timeline or confirmed list of new routes. Passenger growth is an official expectation. Price gains, if any, are likely to be gradual and uneven, and may be limited to areas with good road access to the airport.
