What happened?

The Tribune reported that the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) carried out demolition drives in the villages of Bhattian, Bahadurke, Kakowal, Noorwala and Sujatwal. The action was ordered by Chief Administrator Vikas Hira and covered 4 illegal colonies and two buildings.

According to the report, developers had been sent notices earlier but did not halt or take down the unauthorised work, so the authority stepped in. Officials told the paper that no one resisted the drives.

The Tribune also reported that GLADA intends to repeat such drives over the coming weeks, with the stated aim of catching unauthorised building before it spreads. Hira urged the public to stay away from plots and buildings in these colonies, and pointed to missing water supply, sewerage, roads and power as the everyday problems residents face. Buyers were asked to check a colony against the list of approved and regularised colonies on the authority's website before paying.

Which sectors are affected?

  • Unauthorised colonies around Ludhiana
  • Bhattian, Bahadurke, Kakowal, Noorwala and Sujatwal villages
  • Residential plotted development
  • Small developers and colony promoters

Potential impact

The immediate effect is on plots and houses inside unapproved layouts. A demolished structure has no resale value, and a plot in a colony that has drawn notices becomes hard to sell or finance. Banks and buyers generally look for approval status, so demand for such land is likely to weaken, though this report gives no price data to size that.

Approved and regularised colonies may gain some relative preference as buyers become more careful about paperwork. That is a reasonable expectation, not a measured trend. Since GLADA says more drives are planned, other unauthorised layouts in the Ludhiana area could be next, but the report does not name them, so the scale of future action is uncertain.
