Illustrative What happened?
Hindustan Times reported that the Expenditure Finance Committee has cleared a ₹138-crore proposal to rebuild the large drain that runs alongside the Crossings Republik township. The stretch begins at ABES Engineering College and ends at the Shahberi culvert on the Greater Noida (west) side. Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation officials told the paper the plan still needs the state government's final approval.
According to the newspaper, the detailed project report covers 1.752 km of the drain, to be rebuilt with precast slabs. A two-lane road is planned over the rebuilt channel. The corporation's chief engineer said the aim is to reduce monsoon flooding and ease traffic between NH-9 and Shahberi.
HT also recalled that the drain is about 10-14 metres wide and around 20 feet deep, and that it was damaged in heavy rain on the night of July 30-31 last year. Officials said it links up with several other drains across Ghaziabad, including those near GT Road, Bulandshahr Road and Loha Mandi.
Which sectors are affected?
- Crossings Republik
- Greater Noida West
- NH-9 to Shahberi road
- Ghaziabad drainage network
Potential impact
If the work is sanctioned, built and kept clear of silt and waste, homes near the drain could face a lower risk of water entering roads and basements in heavy rain. A second road lane on top could also help daily travel. Neither benefit is certain yet, because the project has cleared only one approval stage and no start date or completion timeline was reported.
Any effect on prices is likely to be modest and gradual. Buyers usually value drainage and road access once they see actual results across a monsoon, not on the strength of an approval. Societies sitting right beside the drain may notice the change first, while the effect on projects further away in Greater Noida West is harder to judge from the news alone.
