Illustrative What happened?
The Hindustan Times reported that the Haryana government approved a GMDA proposal for another 100 MLD treatment unit at the Chandu Budhera plant, at a cost of ₹49.5 crore. According to the paper, a works purchase committee chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini cleared it. Five firms bid, and the contract went to the most competitive one.
The paper quoted a GMDA executive engineer as saying this would be the plant's sixth unit and would lift GMDA's treatment capacity to 870 MLD within two to three years. The unit is to come up on 15 acres inside the existing complex. It will include a clear water reservoir, pumping systems and sludge dewatering, and it will connect to GMDA's SCADA monitoring network.
Per the same report, GMDA's CEO said the aim is to support current and planned homes and offices in the Dwarka Expressway belt, covering sectors 81 to 115. GMDA now supplies about 500 MLD from Chandu Budhera and 270 MLD from Basai, roughly 770 MLD together. The committee also put a ₹33 crore stormwater drain tender on hold, which is a separate matter.
Which sectors are affected?
- Sectors 81 to 115, Dwarka Expressway belt
- Chandu Budhera water treatment plant
- Gurugram's newer residential and commercial sectors
Potential impact
Water is a basic condition for living in a new sector, and supply gaps often show up as tanker dependence and higher society maintenance costs. Extra treatment capacity can help reduce that pressure in the Dwarka Expressway sectors, but the unit is two to three years away by GMDA's own estimate. Treatment capacity is also only one link; pipelines and distribution decide what reaches a given tower.
We would not read this as a trigger for price moves. Gurugram's average is about ₹16,500 per sq ft in our data, and a utility approval like this tends to work slowly, by making projects easier to live in rather than by lifting rates quickly. Delays in construction, or uneven distribution, could limit the benefit.
